The Robert M. Clinger III Invitational Golf Tournament at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, February 22, 2011—The Executive Committee of the Robert M. Clinger III Invitational Golf Tournament released the results of the 5th Annual Tournament held on Monday, February 21, 2011 at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The 2011 field once again included forty invitees (thirty-six gentlemen and four women) ranging in age from twenty-two to eighty-seven from the United States and Canada. Ten members and seven employees of the Dunes Golf & Beach Club were in this year’s field. The participants followed a modified captain’s choice format for the tournament.

This year’s weather was sunny skies with temperatures in the sixties and seventies, contrasting starkly with last year’s inclement weather that involved strong winds, rain, and sleet. With all teams finishing just after three o’clock, Dennis Nicholl, head pro of the Dunes Club, posted the final scores in the Waterloo Grill.
The defending champions, which consisted of the Invitational’s founder, Robert M. Clinger III, Larry Yarnell, Steve Vogel, and Isla Carter, successfully defended their title in the Invitational with a closing score of 69 or three under par. The victors were presented the prestigious and much coveted Obelisk of Victory and maintain their bragging rights until the 2012 Invitational where they will defend their title once again. They are the first team in the history of the tournament to successfully defend their title with back-to-back victories.
The second place team consisted of Erick Ficken, Gary Wallace, Allen Banks, and Tony Barnhardt, and posted a one under par, 71. The third place team consisted of Sean Van Horn, Jonathon Smith, Tyron McCray, and Ruby Hodges and posted a one under par, 71, (losing second place as a result of a scorecard playoff).
Several groups with fellow members of the Dunes Club threw down the gauntlet for next year’s tournament, vowing to prevent the defending champions from repeating their victory yet again. It is expected that the 2012 field will include many more members of the Dunes Club and will involve some intense rivalry for the tournament victory. The group disbanded shortly after seven o’clock.
The 2012 Robert M. Clinger III Invitational will be held in February 2012 at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The exact date had not been established as of this release.
